Friday Favorites 6/29

Happy Friday!! This was my first full week at work in a long time (spoiled, I know) and I felt every single minute of it, so to say I’m excited that the weekend is finally here would be a gross understatement.

I haven’t done a Friday Faves in a while, but I have way too many good pins on my boards not to share, so let’s dive right in!

Favorite Wow– In honor of our country’s upcoming birthday (236 years young!) I’m posting this picture of an absolutely amazing view right in the good old US of A (Blackwater Falls State Park, West Virginia to be exact)

Favorite Cool– Another homage to our wonderful nation, Lady Liberty made out of MetroCards! How cool is that?

Favorite Savory– I love pasta puttanesca. It’s salty and delicious and apparently has a seedy history, even better!

Favorite Sweet– Easy and perfect for a little 4th of July BBQ

Favorite Quote– I forgot how much I liked this song

Favorite Cute– You know I love maxi skirts/dresses and jean jackets, and I just can’t stop wearing purple.

Favorite Dreamy- I can’t find a source for this, but I would live outside if I could live here.

Favorite Funny- You got that right, Liz Lemon.

Favorite Adorableness– Can’t stop, won’t stop loving owls (and owlets).

There you have it. These are the things that are making me pretty darn happy this Friday. I hope they make you happy too! If you’re celebrating Independence Day this weekend, have fun and be safe!!

Friday Favorites: MDW Edition!

Happy Friday and Happy Almost Memorial Day! I think probably many of you aren’t working today- lucky ducks!- but for those of us who are… let’s just keep our eyes on the prize! We’re so close.

I hope you don’t have to work on Monday, but if you do, I hope you get to enjoy your Memorial Day in some way. Over here, I’ve got a date with my man tonight, a bike ride tomorrow, a long run on Sunday followed by double BBQs and a 4 mile race on Sunday, so I’m pretty excited. The weather is still awfully muggy, but we’re hoping for clear skies at some point. Here’s what keeping me happy until then.

Favorite **Gluten Free** Sweet Treat– Coconut, Oatmeal, Peanut Butter Cookies- I actually discovered that I had all the ingredients on hand last night, so I made them on a whim because I’d been craving cookies all week, and they are so good!! They are sweet and chewy and absolutely delicious. This batch will most definitely not be around on Tuesday.

Favorite Funny- not sure why this cat beard made me laugh so hard, but I hope it makes you laugh too.

Favorite Tip– Clean your entire bathroom in 5 minutes a day. Really. I haven’t tried it yet, but it’s got potential.

Favorite Meal Inspiration– Copycat PF Chang’s Lettuce Wraps. I love PF Chang’s lettuce wraps, but I haven’t been there in forever, and these copycat pictures awoke a serious craving in me. This needs to happen soon.

Favorite Room of the Week– I can’t get enough of the yellow/gray/white room scheme. So cute.

Favorite Cute Idea– Play with your food!

Favorite Brilliant Idea– A keyboard that works for your computer and smart phone. How much easier would this make typing those endless texts? Seriously.

Favorite Summer Outfit– I’m officially on the mint bandwagon, and this whole outfit is just so fresh and summery. I love it.

Swoon. Ok dears. I’m off to tackle the last day of the week– in jeans!! Happy day indeed.

Friday Favorites

It’s Friday. It was a long and busy week for sure, but it’s shaping up to be an even busier weekend. First, let’s play some catch-up.

Monday was a sleepy day. Chris and I were both so sore and tired from the 5 Boro Bike Tour, we took it very easy and rested.

Tuesday was Chris’ 27th Birthday!! I made him breakfast, and I later wined and dined him at La Conguita (a Cuban restaurant in Jersey City that Chris told me he was taking me too the night he surprised me with homemade Cuban). It was good, but not great. What was great was the cupcake I got him at Crumbs

demolished of course

The Crumbs thing goes back to last year, when Chris and I had just started going out, he asked me to come to his birthday party. Not knowing him very well, but also being well taught not to show up to a party empty handed, I brought a Crumb’s cupcake because they are the bomb. It was a huge hit, so I stopped by after work on Tuesday and picked one up again. It was a cookies and cream cupcake, and all the icing tasted like the middle of an Oreo. It was perfect. Sadly (or maybe thankfully), Crumb’s doesn’t offer anything gluten free, so I only had a bite, but it did not go to waste.

Wednesday night, I had a friend date with a new friend from book club scheduled for 7, so Chris and I squeezed in a super quick 2.75 mile run. Even though it wasn’t much, it was speedy! And I’m glad we got the run in. Unfortunately, that meant I went to dinner pretty sweaty and gross. I guess if we’re going to be friends, Shannon should know that I spend about 75% of my non-working hours in running clothes. Oh well.

We met for Thai at Sky Thai in my neighborhood. It’s a super cute place with delicious food. I got the tofu pad thai

and Shannon got chicken curry. We talked for a million hours and generally had a blast. She’s an interior designer and has one of the most fascinating lives I’ve ever heard of. I’m super glad we got to chat one on one.

Yesterday, I did the world’s biggest grocery haul, and now I’m hopefully set through next weekend. I hate shopping on the week nights, but we’ve had such hectic weekends lately, it’s been hard to find the time. At least I’m good for a while now.

After my shopping I had every intention of running, but 2 grocery stores and 1.5 hours of shopping literally sucked the life out of me, and it was all I could do to put dinner together and collapse on the couch.

I made up for it this morning with a 3.5 mile run! I’m a beast. I know. No, it’s really just that I have a busy weekend coming up, and I’m just a much more pleasant human being when I’ve run, so I made sure to get it in when I could. Of all the reasons to run (my pants don’t fit, I’m pissed off, I’m training for something) preemptive stress relief runs are the best. I was so thankful for that little half hour of quiet, me time this morning because I knew that whatever happened in my day, it was already assuredly a good one. Knowing your going to have a good day by 6:30 am because you took care of yourself first is an awesome feeling.

You know what else was awesome? Seeing the sun come up over the Hudson

The weather is finally cooperating with us, so I woke up to clear skies and brilliant sunshine. That’s something to be extra thankful for.

Tonight we’re celebrating the birthday boy in force with our dear friends coming from the entire tri-state area (NJ, NY, and PA) to Jersey City, to our favorite local spot for pizza and good company. Some of the crew is staying over, which means I’ll be playing host for the evening/morning. It also means Miles will get to engage in his favorite activity, which is of course, sleeping on someone’s face. He doesn’t get to sleep in the bed, so he can only fulfill this dream of his when someone stays over (lucky guests, right? who wants to crash with us next??) I’m interested to see who he picks too. There are two guys who he gives love eyes to staying over, so I’m sure he’ll drive himself mad splitting his time between each of them.

Tomorrow, we’re heading to central Jersey for a joint birthday/Mother’s Day celebration with Chris’ mom and aunt. It’s a steakhouse, and even though I eat red meat maybe twice a year, I do love me a good steak. It just makes me sad that cows have to be both freaking adorable and delicious at the same time.

Sunday is maybe a 5 mile race in Hoboken, but maybe just a run around Jersey City followed by my surprise gift to Chris. I ended up filling him in on it on Tuesday to work out some logistics, so I can tell you now too! Ever since Chris got his sweet DSLR in January, every time we run or walk along Pier A in Hoboken and see this view

source

Chris laments the fact that he forgot his camera to take advantage of the spectacular photo op, so I figured now would be a good time to help him get that shot! Sunday is supposed to be beautiful (fingers crossed), so I’m packing us a picnic lunch, bringing a book and letting him take all the pictures his heart (or memory card) can stand. He loved the idea, and I’m pretty proud of myself too.

So, there you have it. A busy, but fun weekend. I’ll take as many pictures as my heart (or iPhone) can stand too and share with you soon. Until then, here’s some other things making me happy this weekend.

Favorite Outfit– Bethenny is so cute and always looks so put together. I don’t know about the hat, but I’m dying for that jean jacket over maxi dress look. If only I had a jean jacket…

Favorite Article to Ponder– Could you live apart-together? I couldn’t.

Favorite Too Beautiful To Eat– I die.

Favorite Funny- Miles can only barely make it to three.

Favorite Dream Bedroom– I don’t care that it would be dirty all the time. I just don’t care.

Favorite Brilliant Idea– this company turns your children’s drawings into actual toys. Amazing.

Favorite True Story- Every. Single. Time.

Favorite Yum– And it’s gluten free (if you omit the breadcrumbs)!

And finally, Favorite Pet I Need Yesterday

Bye friends. Talk to ya soon.

Friday Favorites- 4/20

Hi there and happy Friday! It’s been an absolutely crazy week for me. I think I’ve only eaten 2 meals at home this whole week. That’s crazy. Luckily, it’s been mostly good things.

Monday my coworkers took me out to a late birthday lunch at Cafe Sage, a Thai restaurant downtown.

Shrimp Pad Thai never disappoints. One of my coworkers even baked me gluten free brownies!

These were extra chewy and delicious, so I asked her if she did anything different and she said she used a mix but decided to add an extra egg. I will definitely be doing that the next time I make gfree brownies.

Tuesday night I went for a haircut. It was just me and the lady, Estelle, who usually cuts my hair. She’s like this totally fiery broad, and she tells the wackiest stories. The haircut lasted like 90 minutes, but it was worth it because she had me cracking up.

Pre cut

It’s a good look for me, and post cut:

Not smiling with teeth because I think there’s food in them and I can’t find my floss. Under the glowing fluorescent lights of my office (and no I can’t really wear a sleeveless top, but I’m going to until someone yells at me because it’s hot as bawls in here). It looked much cuter when she blew it out, but I’m a dummy who forgot to take a picture, so you get my post shower, post blow dry, post slept on, re-straightened version.

Wednesday night I met with my ladies & wine book club to discuss the Hunger Games (mostly we just debated what we thought Peeta should have looked like in the movie) and drink 1/2 priced malbecs. I was so shocked to find out that lots of the girls were really disappointed in the movie! I loved it. I thought it was very true to form, but maybe I’m just easy to please?

Yesterday was a whirlwind start to finish, but I got to meet my friend Steph for sushi after work and enjoyed the heck out of seaweed salad and a tempura sweet potato roll. Now, I am a puffy faced monster from all that salt, but it’s Friday, so I don’t care!

On the sched for this weekend is a trip to my favorite Cuban place (Cuban twice in one week? Yes please), a trip down to New Brunswick to check in for the half marathon and pick up our race kits. While there we’re going to the crummy DMV so I can get my license renewed (25 now baby!), address changed finally and get the title to my car officially transferred to my name (I have to remove the lien the lending company has on it). It’s going to be a busy (and probably boring) day, but Sunday is the half marathon! I hope!

The weather still stinks. There’s rumors they might shorten the race, which for me would be worse than if they cancelled it. I’m bummed because I hate wasting money, and I paid for a half marathon, not a 10 miler, but mostly I feel really bad for Chris. This is his first half marathon. He worked so hard and put in every training run. He was so looking forward to it, and now the whole thing kind of feels like a bust. If we run it, we have to run it in the rain, which sucks. If it gets cancelled, all our training culminates in nothing really, which sucks. If it gets shortened, then he can tell people he ran a 10 miler, but not a half marathon, which sucks. There’s no way around it. This just kind of sucks.

Sorry to be a downer, but I want to write a letter to Mother Nature, and tell her to get her ish together and fast. Nobody bums my baby out! Nobody!

I’ll get to work on my letter. Here’s some things that do not suck this Friday 4/20.

Favorite Neighborhood- Mine! These trees (I don’t think they’re cherry blossoms?) are in full bloom, and walking home through a shower of pink petals is pretty much heaven.

Favorite Summer Sweet Treat– Blueberry Cupcakes. These would make the most beautiful addition to any backyard BBQs this summer.

Favorite Savory Yum– Homemade Tomato Soup. Tomato Soup is Chris’ favorite, and I think he’d be floored if I managed to make this.

Favorite Thing I Will Someday Create– Book Cave. Book Cave>Bat Cave

Favorite Quote- By Albert Einstein. He should know about genius.

Favorite Place I Must Visit– It’s a bridge. Through a river. It blows my mid.

Favorite Funny– Please read this all the way to the end. I died.

Favorite Guilty as Charged– An interesting article on words food bloggers should stop using immediately. I’ve probably used half of them in this post alone.

Favorite Cute- I literally do almost this exact same thing to Chris as soon as he walks in the door from work. Don’t worry, he loves it. I think.

I hope some of these made you happy this Friday too! And if you’re in Colorado, maybe steer clear of UC Boulder today.

Happy Friday!!

Friday Favorites- 4/6

Good morning! Contrary to last week, this week actually flew by for me. It’s funny. It’s always the ones you think will drag that speed on by.

Last night we had a 5 mile tempo run on the schedule, but life got in the way, and before I knew it, it was 7:30 and we hadn’t left the house yet. We were feeling pretty drained , so I proposed we run the 5 miles, but at an easy pace, and Chris happily agreed.

As I was waiting and waiting for this

I decided that I probably wouldn’t want to cook dinner when we got home, so we agreed on takeout from our favorite place. It’s been way too long since we ordered from them anyway; they were probably beginning to think we died. I brought my phone with me and ordered when we reached our turnaround point. The food arrived like 10 minutes after we stepped back in the apartment. It was wonderful.

Chicken Scallopini with rice. YUM.

I know many people have off today for Good Friday, and I’m crazy jealous of that. I’m at work. We might get an early release. They’re pretty shady about letting us know in advance, so I still have no idea, but I’m holding out hope. Anyway, while I’m here, these are some things making me happy this Friday.

Favorite Yum- Mayo Free Honey Mustard Chicken Salad– Everything IGE makes looks delicious, but this has inspired me to get a little creative with my lunches. I’ve got to try this.

Favorite Looks Too Good to Eat… Almost– This is the type of cake you plan a wedding around.

Favorite Thing I Need to Make Immediately- Loaded Mashed Potatoes– Um. Need these.

Favorite Why is This Not My Bedroom?– This just looks like heaven. I would seriously never go to work if my bed looked like that, so maybe it’s a good thing it’s not my bedroom.

Favorite I Need These Yesterday– How could you ever have a bad day with these on your couch when you walked in the door?

Favorite Dream Home– I know it’s a light house, but I bet it’s for sale, and it’s in Long Island!! My commute wouldn’t even be so bad.

Favorite Funny– We’ve been re-watching Arrested Development on Netflix over here, and it’s just as funny the 33rd time as it was the first. If you haven’t seen it, you really should.

Favorite I Would Wear This– I’ve been looking for a way to incorporate orange into my wardrobe, and I think the blue-orange combo is just great.

Favorite New Pet Obsession– Maybe it’s that swan I saw the other day, but I’ve decided I need an inquisitive bird in my life.

In other news, the stuff that delayed my run yesterday pertains to a decision I’ve been pondering for a while now. I think I made my choice. I’ll do a post soon and fill you in on what it is I’ve decided on. I’m pretty excited about it all.

If you’re celebrating anything this weekend or even if you’re just celebrating the weekend, I hope you have a glorious one!

Friday Favorites-3/30

Friday Friday Friday! You can’t see me, but I’m doing my happy dance. This week really dragged for me. Every day I found myself itching to get out of my chair and away from my desk at the too early hour of oh about 11:30. It was a struggle, but we made it! Go us!

Last night, we went out for a 5 mile run with a warm up of one mile, 3 miles at our tempo pace of 9:40, and a cool down of another mile. The weather was a bit warmer than we were expecting, which was nice, but the wind was ferocious.

Knowing that we would be coming home hungry, I did some dinner prep before we left the house. On the menu last night was quinoa with corn, red peppers, and spinach. *side note: I meal planned this last week during our ridiculously warm weather. This is a great summer meal when you can have fresh off the cob Jersey corn, but just because I thought it was summer, did not make it summer in the grocery store, and I had to settle for the canned variety.

I like all of my corn with a side of Bed Bath & Beyond

Not bad, but it doesn’t hold a candle to the real deal.

Anyway, I cooked the quinoa and chopped two red bell peppers before the run, so when we got back all I did was sauté one bag of baby spinach, one can of corn and the peppers in a skillet over medium heat with 2 tbsps of olive oil and 2 tbsps of chopped garlic (we love garlic). I let that simmer for about 8 minutes then added in the cooked quinoa along with about 1/4 cup of chicken stock and seasoned with salt and pepper. I covered the pan with a large lid and, turned the heat to low and simmered for 5 more minutes, then served.

I was so hungry that I dug right in before taking a picture while the food was still pretty, so knowing it would have looked hideous with the iPhone, I kindly asked Chris to capture it with the DSLR, which makes everything look 134xs better. It was yummy, but I’m a hunger beast on tempo run days so I went back to the kitchen after dinner for a snack of a sliced apple with cinnamon and cinnamon raisin peanut butter and a glass of chocolate soy milk, for protein obviously.

That snack made me pretty happy yesterday. Here’s some more things making me pretty happy this Friday:

Favorite Funny

Oh I loved this episode. I still think of this every single time I move.

Favorite Yum City

Mexican Lasagna. This looks supremely delicious.

Favorite Adorable Food

They’re so cute I wouldn’t want to eat them, but they have pistachios, so I’m sure I would eat them.

Favorite Motivation

I don’t know why this made me laugh so hard, but it really did. I don’t have abs that set off metal detectors, but I’d sure like to! Also, the link no longer works, so I can’t really identify this one.

Favorite Household Design Inspiration

I have to get these for the 8 year old me. I owe it to her.

Favorite Gluten Free Deliciousness

You had me at flourless chocolate peanut butter.

Favorite Spring Outfit

I think it hits on two great spring trends with the colorful jeans and the nautical stripes. I would love to rock this.

Favorite Speaks to My Soul

Just love.

Favorite House I Should Probably Be Living In

Looks like we’re moving to Washington.

Favorite I Need This Yesterday

I swear, if I had these to drink my coffee out of every morning, I would never complain about having to go to work again. Ever. Alas, I do not, but I’ll save you the complaining. I hope your Friday goes swimmingly, and if you’re not at work today please go back to bed for me.

Friday Favorites- The Hunger Games Edition

Hi y’all! It’s Friday! It’s a sleepy day over here because last night we saw The Arctic Monkeys and The Black Keys in concert!!

The show was great! Both bands were awesome, and the crowd at the Garden was the friendliest group of people I have ever seen a concert with. Everyone was just really happy and nice. It was a good time, but I’m dragging today!

Other than that, I’ve got one thing and one thing only on my mind today, and that is The Hunger Games.  I actually don’t go to the movies that often because I’m cheap I have discerning taste, so I don’t usually spend $15 (this is NYC) for your run of the mill rom-com, but I love the movies as a grand spectacle. When there is a blockbuster-y movie about a book I read and enjoyed, I have to see it. Usually the night it comes out. Usually in 3D. I get a little obsessed. It all began with Harry Potter, obviously, but I’ve geeked out over The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and, sadly, Twilight. Those were great, but I feel like there has been OMGSOMUCHHYPE over The Hunger Games, and it’s just pumping me up even more. You can bet your bottom dollar I would have seen it last night were it not for The Black Keys concert, and tonight we’ve got a going away  party for friends who are moving to Germany at the end of the month, so I’ll be going to say good-bye, but if they were moving to Pennsylvania, I would probably be seeing this movie 😉

Long story short, I haven’t seen The Hunger Games, but I’m dying to. I’ll be seeing it Saturday and reliving it in my head all weekend.

So, without further ado, I bring you my Friday Favorites: Hunger Games Edition

Favorite Themed Party Idea– A whole bunch of cute food ideas for maybe a pre-Hunger Games viewing party? I especially love this goat cheese one. Yum.

Favorite T-Shirt I Would Wear to the Theater

Favorite T-Shirt I Would Wear in Real Life– I feel like this one is understated enough that I could totally get away with wearing it ALL THE TIME.

Favorite Hunger Games Funny

Favorite Hunger Games Bling– These are the sweetest bracelets I’ve seen, and this whole Etsy store is filled with jewelry with really cute book and movie references.

Favorite Gorgeous Dessert– These are seriously impressive.

Favorite Nails– Cute flames that don’t look like they’d be too hard to recreate.

Favorite Meme

and finally, Favorite I Need This Yesterday

Anybody else super excited for this too?
